I

am delighted to join my friends and neighbors in one of

America’s “Best Places to Live” in inviting you to share

the many pleasures of Howard County.Whether you

are passing through for the first time, or have accepted our

invitation to “make yourself at home,” you’ll find this guide

from our Office of Tourism has something useful for you.

Howard County is rightly known for its great schools,

award-winning library system, world-class annual arts festival,

and many varied parks and cultural opportunities. But of

course there’s more, including the vibrant and still growing

new town of Columbia, as well as the beautiful scenery of

farms and open space in the county’s western reaches.

If you are a visitor, please make your first stop ourWelcome

Center on Main Street in Old Ellicott City. Follow that

up with a walk past our famous mills and historic railroad

station, and then relax in one (or more!) of our cozy coffee

shops, fine restaurants, art galleries or trendy boutiques.

If you’re here to stay, you can find guidance about selecting a

home and the multiple citizen services Howard County offers.

This guide provides useful information on sustainability and

health care, and will help you access the many parks and recreation

facilities that help make us a growing and vibrant place to live.

We take pride in our past and delight in our evolving

future; we’ve grown a lot in the last few decades, and we

value those who built our base and helped us

prosper.We

also value those new to our communities, which thrive on

inclusion and innovation. Enjoy your visit, welcome to our

home, and consider making it your home in days to come.
